Since January 2007 Camco has been working with Royal Mail Group on a number of aspects of their Group Carbon Management Programme, ranging from technical work developing carbon-related performance indicators and a carbon calculator for transport, through to more strategic advice on carbon management goals, alternate vehicles and assessing potential for building-integrated renewables.
Together with Camco, we’ve established a Carbon Management Programme to help us improve our environmental performance while at the same time reduce our energy costs. With Camco’s expertise in energy and resource management, we have made an effort to reduce our use of fuel and energy and we are trialing alternative fuels in our road fleet. As a result, we have won the 2008 World Mail Corporate Social Responsibility Award for our Carbon Management Programme. Martin Blake Head of Sustainability Royal Mail
Most recently, we have carried out a market assessment of current alternate fuel vehicles to assess the financial and carbon life cycle costs when compared to existing vehicles, including both electric and hybrid. With a fleet of over 30,000 vehicles, our experts had to understand the different range of vehicle types, from a car derived van to an articulated lorry, and the delivery demands placed upon each one. It was crucial that our experts gained an awareness of Royal Mail’s range of client use profiles and we carried out extensive research on the alternate vehicles market.
Our approach included making contact with manufacturers and end-users in the market for commercial alternate vehicles including private and public sector. We concluded the financial life cycle costs are nearly 10% less than equivalent diesel with CO2 savings over 70%. As a result, our assessment not only demonstrates that certain electric vehicle types are financially viable but that they also offer sound environmental benefits.
