Emission AssessmentMercy Corps
Mercy Corps is a non-governmental organisation that delivers emergency relief, sustainable development and civil society programmes. It has headquarters in the US and the UK and country programme offices in 36 additional countries. In 2007, Camco worked with Mercy Corps to quantify the GHG emissions associated with its global operations. The operational boundary of the assessment included on-site energy consumption, owned vehicles, business travel, office deliveries, refrigerant gas loss and waste disposal.Data collection was especially challenging for Mercy Corps as several of its offices operate out of conflict zones so actual data was sometimes not available. To estimate the emissions associated with these offices, Camco applied factors such as kilowatt hours of electricity consumed per square metre per year, derived from Mercy Corps offices that were able to provide data. The assessment report provided a breakdown of total emissions by office, general activity and WBCSD/WRI scope. Data was also presented in metrics such as tonnes of CO2e per employee per year, which enabled Mercy Corps to make comparisons between the carbon intensity of different offices. In future assessments this metric will allow Mercy Corps to track underlying changes in emissions, as well as changes in absolute emissions resulting from expansion or contraction of the organisation.Going forward, Camco has helped Mercy Corps to implement internal systems to record the data required for a GHG emissions assessment. This has improved the ease and efficiency of data collection and allows Mercy Corps to establish a robust emissions baseline against which reduction measures can be monitored.
