We are currently investigating the potential for whole house low carbon refurbishment to deliver 80% carbon reductions in existing homes. The work involves identifying the whole package of carbon reduction measures that are required, the cost per house of installing all these measures, the key barriers to a whole house approach and the main policy instruments for delivery. Our research feeds into the UK Government’s ‘Heat and Energy Saving Strategy’.
This piece of work builds upon a long history of activity in whole house refurbishment, which includes the Generation Homes initiative and the Existing Homes Alliance that we helped to establish in 2008 to spearhead action for greater carbon reductions in housing. It recognises the key issue of getting to grips with UK homes which are responsible for almost a third of UK carbon emissions.
